ka か ki き ku く ke け ko こ

Last lesson, we learned あ い う え お. As we continue our journey through the entire Japanese Hiragana alphabet, we will follow the same regimen as we did with the previous lesson. The practice and repetition of the stroke order helps us to memorize each character and distinguish the subtle difference of similar looking characters.

The pronunciation of this set is very similar to あ い う え お with a prefixed “k”. Pronunciation is as follows:

ka is “kah”

ki is “kee”

ku is “koo”

ke is “keh”

ko is “koh”

As we move onto more sets of Hiragana characters, following this lesson, the pronunciation of each will follow the same pattern where we have the same vowels but with different prefixed consonants. Now let’s learn to write these characters!

ka か

Hiragana ka stroke order

Pronounce the character as you practice the stroke order. Complete an entire line for each character  before moving onto the next.

ki き

Hiragana ki stroke order

ku く

Hiragana ku stroke order

ke け

Hiragana ke stroke order

ko こ

Hiragana ko stroke order

Before moving onto creating flashcards, write each character in sequential order (かきくけこ) until the end of the line. Your practice sheet should now resemble this:

Flashcards

Create your flashcards and combine them with your flashcards for あ い う え お. Every time we learn a new set of characters, we will continue to test ourselves on all characters learned so far. This will enable us to solidify our memorization of every character. You should now be testing yourself on 10 characters:

あ い う え お

か き く け こ

Test yourself on writing the Hiragana characters with the romaji side of the flashcards face up. Shuffle and repeat this until you can successfully write all the characters without referring to learning material for 3 rounds.

Test yourself with the romaji side face up. Write the Hiragana character for each romaji pronunciation. Repeat this exercise until you can write every character purely from memory. When you have completed these characters, it will be time to move onto learning sa さ shi し su す se せ so そ.
